Locking access to a file shared on CIFS while a user has it open

Hi all,

I'm attempting to setup FreeNAS to have a samba share so that multiple users can access the same files.
The thing is, I want to be able to limit other users' access to a specific file when a user has it open on their windows machine (Which might also be an old Windows XP machine) so they don't run over each other work or corrupt the file by accident.

Any ideas?

Thanks! I think that the second link is probably the information I'm looking for. I'll look into the relevant applications and make sure they lock the file on their own.

I'd say because the default is enabled, which i'd never recommend you disable. But if you want to disable it you could use the appropriate parameters in the FreeNAS GUI. Of course, as the link above mentions, data corruption is likely to occur.
