Learning about SAS discs

Hi all

I am new to this and have a couple of questions, all related to SAS disks.

Purpose of TrueNAS server:
  • I am a photographer & videographer, so deal with pretty large data volumes
  • This is a pure backup server for multiple PC's and a Synology NAS as part of my 3-2-1 backup strategy
  • Will not be running 24x7, only when used for creating backups, a couple of times per week
  • Not concerned about power consumption, focus is MB/s backup throughput
My setup is:
  • TrueNAS-13.0-U5.3
  • FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE-p7 amd64
  • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v2 @ 2.80GHz
  • Asus P9x79 Pro motherboard
  • 64GB of DDR3 ECC memory
  • LSI HBA 9300_8i
  • 8x 6TB Hitachi HUS726060AL5214 disks
  • Single SATA boot disk
Question 1 - General disc configuration
  • HDD Standby - Always On
  • Advanced Power Management - since I am mainly performance driven, I have set it to 254
Are those those reasonable settings for my use case?

Question 2 - Difference between SMART self-test and Background Scan
I assume those two scans are two different things but I am not certain. It seems that the Background Scan launches every time I boot the server, something I will be doing quite a lot, so maybe not a good idea. I Googled it but couldn't find anything meaningful.
Hence my questions:
  • Are they indeed different?
  • For my use case, would it make sense to switch-off the background scan?
  • How would I switch the background scan off under FreeBSD (found the command sdparm for Linux, but that doesn't work under FreeBSD)?
  • How often would you run the SMART test?
Question 3 - SMART tests
On a few disks, I have a Background Long SMART test that says it is in progress, but I don't think it is because it doesn't show the Self-test execution status in %:

SMART Self-test log
Num Test Status segment LifeTime LBA_first_err [SK ASC ASQ]
Description number (hours)
# 1 Background long Aborted (by user command) - 48244 - [- - -]
# 2 Background long Self test in progress ... - NOW - [- - -]
# 3 Background short Completed - 48224 - [- - -]

When I try to cancel the 'in progress ...' test, I get this:

root@truenas[~]# smartctl -X /dev/da0
smartctl 7.2 2021-09-14 r5236 [FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE-p7 amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-20, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org
Abort self test failed [unsupported field in scsi command]

Can I just ignore this or will this cause issues?

Thanks very much for your help.

With kind regards
Phil
