So on my servers, I run 1tb of ram, mirrored SLOG and 2 mirrored Meta Drives, along with 24 4tb sata drives and 12 800gb sas ssd drives.
I normally run the sata drives in mirrored vdevs, but once the l2arc gets all warmed up, majority of the data comes from there.
We never run more than 50% of storage space, but our fragmentation seems to be really high for some reason.
We will migrate off and let lun space reclamation go, but it still shows as being quite fragmented.
So i'm wondering, at some point does it make sense to run a large raidz instead, to help deal with the fragmentation. I know the spinnign rust will have lower iops, but majority of our iops are coming from the ssd anyway.
could the meta drives be increasing the fragmentation? With that much ram, they are kind of pointless I think.
