Is it safe to use /data to store burn-in reports?

Background:

- I'm going through the burn-in process on new machine
- I'd want to store copies of the SMART test results for future reference
- Since I'll be running `badblocks`, I haven't setup a zpool yet
- I created a directory at `/data/smart-reports` (which I'm fairly certain is on the USB)
- I wrote some test files in there
- They survived a reboot

That makes me think it's safe for storage while I'm doing the burn-in. (I'll copy them off and do a fresh FreeNAS install on the USB when I'm done with the burn-in).

Is there any reason not to do this (or a better approach that can be used)?

I would just use /root/smart-reports

Which is in root's home dir, a little bit better than spewing all over the root of the drive. And survives updates.
