Hello all!

I still consider myself new, and am not sure if this is specifically a hardware question to go into that category.. Sorry if so!

I'm looking to pull the trigger and order my components. Definitely going with the SuperMicro X10SL7-F-O, but I'm having a hard time making sure I grab the right processor.

I've read the 1230 V3 is awesome according to cyberjock's hardware recommendation post. However, I do see lots of builds including 1231 V3 and newegg is trying to sell the 1231 over the 1230.

The 1231 is slightly faster, yay! However, the 1231 doesn't support F16C, EM64T or FMA3. (I did a very basic lookup of what these are, but not knowledgeable about them..)

Could anyone offer me some input or feedback of what may be a better processor? The prices are almost identical.. I'd also be open to know about slight better but not much more expensive prices.

I plan to act as a NAS for 3 offsite offices using rsync(or bacula) as well as local NAS, and run a plex media server for 2-4 users to stream through. Let's assume some level of transcoding may come into play, 2 1080 streams at once. There will also be an owncloud jail. In total, this system will support ~ 12TB of data.

Thanks,
Danno

I assume you're referring to the E3-1230/1 v3 ? I saw no difference between the two other than clock frequency on the Intel ARK site. The 1231 is slightly faster, and the 1230 has reached end of life, according to the ARK site. I used a 1241 in my build, it was the same price as the 1231 at the time I purchased.

<edit> It looks like all of those extensions supported by the 1230 are also supported by any Xeon that's Haswell or later, and would be supported by the 1231 as well. </edit>

Linkman,
Woops! Darn.. yeah I meant E3 not E5, sorry about that.. doesn't seem to be a way to change the title either. You know.. I've been using CPUBoss to compare processors and tehy list the 1241 for $2400!!!! I see now, that's a mistake on their part... I am now considering the 1241 as well. :)

Thanks,
Danno

Yeah, that's a little overpriced :) It's $278 on NewEgg.com today, FYI.

There should be little difference between the two - one is just the newer model.

Usually an i3 is totally sufficient though unless you plan to really serve all those clients at once and they all tax the system
