My FreeNAS 9.3 installed Intel X540-T2 10Gb Ethernet Card,And two ports had connected to Switch's 10Gb ports.
But the ports status is still no carrier,not active.
Here was the ifconfig command displays:

ix0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500
options=407bb<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,JUMBO_MTU,VLAN_HWCSUM,TSO4,TSO6,LRO,VLAN_HWTSO>
ether a0:36:9f:5a:77:7c
nd6 options=9<PERFORMNUD,IFDISABLED>
media: Ethernet autoselect
status: no carrier
ix1: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500
options=407bb<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,JUMBO_MTU,VLAN_HWCSUM,TSO4,TSO6,LRO,VLAN_HWTSO>
ether a0:36:9f:5a:77:7e
nd6 options=9<PERFORMNUD,IFDISABLED>
media: Ethernet autoselect
status: no carrier

In forums,i found some guys had used the Intel X540-T2 succed.
But why my card had the problem?

I find the link on my Chelsio 10GbE to be down until the interfaces have been configured from the GUI...

No easy way to test on an X540, but on an X520-SR2 the link pops right up if I up the interface.

We do have some rules here (see the handy link in red at the top of each page) and part of that is that we need more detailed information about your hardware, which would definitely include your switch type.

Make sure your switch port is not shutdown, and configured for autonegotiation. Also give us some idea of what happens if you plug into a 1GbE copper switchport. After you finish telling us about your hardware, that is.

My environment was:
HUAWEI CE6850-48T4Q-EI switch
DELL PowerEdge R730+Inrel X540-T2
FreeNAS 9.3-RELEASE

The switch port is not shutdown, and configured for autonegotiation,and worked for another servers.

When the X540-T2's 10Gb port plug into a 1GbE copper switchport,the port light still was't working and status was no carrier.

what SFP's are you using? are they on the supported SFP list for intel? I've had issues in the past trying to use SFP's that either werent compatible or something extra had to be configured for it to function.

Same problem, but different card: using a Chelsio T420-CR with Chelsio optics. Similar display: card shows up as "running" and "up", but I get the "no carrier" tag.

Tried removing the interfaces and re-adding them - no luck. Updated to the lastest FreeNAS 9.3, rebooted several times, and swapping optics. No dice.

That's odd, Chelsio is supposed to work well.

Darren: that's exactly the one I bought (even the eBay seller I bought it from), with their SFPs. So I'm thinking it's a bad NIC, and will replace it with another to see how that goes. Crossing my fingers!

Alas, no luck. Got a brand new T420-CR, popped it in there, switched optics, and still "no carrier". Removed the interface, re-added it, nope. Noticed when I first installed it that FreeNAS detected an older firmware version (1.3?) and loaded 1.5 (I think). Would nuking the whole box and re-installing from scratch be worth the effort? My Intel 10GbE seems to be working just fine, but I haven't put it into production yet.

mine upgraded the firmware on first install of the card as well, and then it preceded to function 100%. what SFP's are you using?

Definitely validate compatibility of the optics. I don't know if there might be a BIOS screen or additional information included in FreeNAS dmesg output, but you could look at those too.

Yeah, got Chelsio FTLX8571D3BCL-CL optics - when digging further, I find that they are Chelsio's part #SM10G-SR which are compatible with the T420 series. Nothing stands out in the dmesg either, just "no carrier". No lights on the NIC or switch ports they're plugged into after the initial power-on.

what if you assign a static IP address to one of the NIC's? Does it display active or anything at all?

Yup, already assigned a static IP to it and made sure it wasn't something already in use by any other device (and that it was in the proper VLAN). Here's what I see:
