Hi,

I'm trying to install freenas 8.0.4 x64 to a IDE CF module. I can boot from the USB, but it doesn't give me the option in the menu that comes up to install to harddrive. I know it does give give this option when booting from liveCD, but I don't have a desktop computer which has cd-rom and an IDE connector on motherboard.

I installed freenas .7 once, when I had a desktop computer that had cd-rom drive and IDE, but I fried the mobo, so can't use that way any longer.

What do you suggest? I want to install embedded on this CF module. I would like to use my server as a file sharing utility.

Hi Spherical,

So let me parrot this back to you to make sure I have it correct....

You have a box you want to install FreeNAS on that doesn't have a CD ROM & you want to install to a PATA\IDE CF module? And you don't have any other PC's that have IDE ports?

My first suggestion would be to grab something like Unetbootin from here:

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

write something like puppy linux to your key, boot that & follow the instructions here:

http://www.freenas.org/images/resources/freenas8.0.3/freenas8.0.3_guide.html

Section 2.3.1

to write the image out to your CF card.

Hi Spherical,

Well that's exactly where you want to be, unfortunately as you said you are booting off the USB key not the CF module.

The image file you are looking to write out is actually a full running system....there is no installer from there (like the is in pfsense or maybe FN 7.2.***X).

I don't know exactly what to tell you to do besides you want to do whatever you did to get the image file on the USB key to the CF module.

You could try using this: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/

to make a USB key that should give you the ability to actually boot the .iso from the USB key and use the FreeNAS installer to write the image file out to your CF module.

I tried what you suggested, got the x64 release 8.0.4 and put the iso on the usb thumb drive with pendrivelinux, doesn't work.

But something just made a click inside my head

You were right in your first response :-D

Going to try to get it to work that way now!

The resource I used to get iso files bootable on usb stick was this:

http://renevanbelzen.wordpress.com/...ble-usb-stick-with-mac-os-x-in-10-easy-steps/

I tried with Unetbootin for mac to get bootable usb stick, tried puppy linux and kubuntu. With both it said: Missing Operating System

So now trying with above method. I know most linux distro's come with the possibility to install after booting liveCD/liveUSB. So I'll install it to another harddrive, download freeNAS after which I'll do the xzcat and dd method to get it on the CF module :)
