Any suggestions for on-line sites to purchase server type hardware?

Or any brick and mortar stores near Atlanta, Georgia.

Thanks

Amazon and Newegg are probably the two most common. Check PCPartPicker and it'll show you real time best prices across quite a number of sites.

Do not buy blindly using PC Part Checker, it has guided people to purchase RAM that wasn't compatable with a motherboard in the past. I tend to fancy NewEgg for most items but SuperBiiz is typically good for RAM purchases.

If you know what motherboard you will be buying then you have most of the battle won.

Thanks joesmuck. Ok, a dumb question. Do I need to install Unix for FreeNAS? Or is FreeNAS a complete stand alone system?

FreeNAS is a self-contained OS which is based on FreeBSD. So you would need to install FreeNAS.

FreeNAS is stand alone (based on FreeBSD) and can be installed on a USB stick or other device (SATA DOM, SSD, ...).
In the last available version (of 9.10) you can also have a mirror boot device (which is advised for USB sticks).

You can check in FreeNAS's manual, it is quite well documented.
