Hey folks,

I am looking into building my own NAS with FreeNAS OS.

Use case:
1. Mainly CIFS
2. Backup my data from my laptops
3. Download website backups to my local NAS via SCP or FTP

The hardware I was looking at:

Case: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ASIN=B008R524GS&linkCode=as2&tag=brisblo0b-20
PSU: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master...-PCARD3-US/dp/B001G0WPLK/ref=pd_bxgy_pc_img_y
Motherboard: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Intel-H7...73324438&sr=1-2&keywords=motherboard+Mini-ITX
CPU: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i3-3220-Dual-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B0093H8HXS/ref=pd_sim_e_3
Memory: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Venge...M2A1600C9/dp/B004CRSM4I/ref=pd_bxgy_pc_text_z

Do you think this is enough CPU and Memory?
Are there any other recommendations? I try to stay below 400USD without disks.

Thanks,

Jan

Is there any alternative to the N54L? I haven't found any similar servers.

Hi Jan,

I don't know of anyone else who sells something that's in the same "size class" as the Microservers. That said, I'm sure you could find somebody who's assembling something similar but I don't know of any similarly sized companies (e.g. that you could find on Amazon\Newegg) that make such a solution.

Right now we are really just taking wild stabs in the dark with the recommendations as we really don't have much info about what you actually want to do with it. It would certainly help if you could maybe flesh out what you think you want.

Hi Will,

sorry for not pointing out what I am trying to do.

1. I am not sure if I build my own microserver or if I should buy the HP one.

Daily tasks of the freenas:
1. Synchronize certain folders via ftp/scp with a webserer hosted in a DC - will be scripted (every 15-20 minutes)
2. Daily CIFS and NFS synchronization between my laptop and server via WAN
3. Hourly and daily snapshots

That's everything I need the NAS for. Based on what I have read, I need 8GB RAM to get ZFS running properly.
However, I am curios about how much CPU I will need to get FreeNAS working correctly and not horrible slow.

Size of drives is probably 3 TB disks which are used for SAN storage systems right now. (WD disks)

Regarding the RAID build i will most likely take a raidz1

You'll need an SAS HBA then, like an M1015 crossflashed to IT mode. Pretty sure the NxxL's controller is SATA only.
