How to set up "shares" with CORE?... Not seeing a "share type" option in Dataset...

I'm currently trying to set up my first NAS server. I'm very new to this.

I set up a mirrored pair of drives, with a dataset to go along with it (I don't really understand what a dataset is, though).

There doesn't seem to be a share type option in the dataset as per many online guides (I want to set up SMB sharing which I assume is required for it to talk to and with a Windows system).

Lots of documentation online, yes, but it's very overwhelming, so I thought I'd also ask here.

Ah, seems like it's only an option when creating the Dataset fresh...

The tutorial states:

Create the ZFS dataset with these settings:
  • aclmode = restricted
  • case sensitivity = insensitive
Is this 100% accurate? I'm assuming it is.

Think of a dataset as the equivalent of a partition: A logical volume you can mount (share).
There is no "share type" option because you can share with any protocol (SMB, NFS, or even AFS while it's still around).

To what tutorial are you referring?

It was on a TrueNAS page. I can't find it though, I don't know where it went.

Anyway, I tried following the tutorial video on this page: https://www.truenas.com/docs/core/coretutorials/storage/pools/permissions/
(direct link to file: https://www.truenas.com/docs/files/userspermissionsacls.mp4)

I did everything for the SMB-specific setup, but I can't get it to work. When I put in \\ipofmyNAS in Windows Explorer, it says it's not found (ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).

A few things to check for starters:

Is the share listed and showing as enabled at Sharing>SMB?

Is the SMB Service shown as running on the Services page?

Good! Did you use a accountname and PW other than "root" at the Windows request for username and pw?

It doesn't get that far.

ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND

(when I try and access it via Windows Explorer...)

Note: I'm using the same IP as when I access CORE's control panel, except I put in a "\\" before it.

I suggest that you reboot both your TrueNAS and Windiws boxes and try again.

Look to see your NAS listed under "Network" (at the bottom of the Quick Access list in the left pane of Windows Explorer).

I can see it, but only after I turned on Network Discovery in Windows or whatever (it was off).

Tried restarting the NAS.

Still, can't connect to it using \\. However, I do seem to be able to connect to it and pull up the credentials screen if I access it using the Network menu you mentioned (using the TRUENAS icon), and I probably could have even prior to the NAS restart.

This is odd. Any ideas?

And fwiw, I can indeed log into the dataset or whatever it is, using the icon access I mentioned. How do I log out though, by the way (without having to "reset" things by restarting my Windows session itself)? Seems like it saves my credentials even if I close the window, which is not desirable in my mind (I want it to ask me every time; inconvenience for the sake of slightly better security I would imagine).

What if you specify the share name in the address bar?

You'll have to share your setup, then. We're shooting in the dark here.

I don't know what you mean.

The NAS is hooked up to a port on my switch, as is my PC. Does that help?

I don't know what details to tell you because I don't know what's relevant.

Again, I can 100% access it using Network in Windows Explorer. Just the address bar method doesn't work for some reason, even though I can access the control panel using the same address, just without the \\.

Glad you are in now. There seem to be a plethora of reasons why the ip won't give access when the menu will, and I don't see identifying it over the forum. Suggest that you Google for solutions and investigate the several scenario presented. Superuser and microsoft site each had postings on the topic.

To disconnnect, I would delete the particular credential in Windows Credential Manager.

So when I look at the network "folder" or "drive" it's basically just like a normal Windows directory right?

(Network > TRUENAS > datasetname > empty"folder")

Meaning I can write to, edit, delete, read, etc. just like it was a directory on my main PC? And TrueNAS takes care of everything, right?

Also, I see nothing in Windows Credential Manager pertaining to TrueNAS; what I've been doing instead is I just log out of Windows and back in to have it ask me again, but it's less than ideal.

SMB and Permissions settings take care of everything. My relatively vanilla setup works without giving me any issues that I know about.

You have nothing for computers on your network under the Windows Credentials tab?

I have absolutely nothing under Windows Credentials.

"No Windows credentials."
