Hi, i know this question had been ask many times. And i have read thru those threads. But i am still facing problems.

Background

FreeNAS 9.2.1.7 with z2 raid, 6 x 3TB HDDs. FreeNAS on USB thumb drive.
Try to make a Veracrypt Container file of 1TB, but always end up with network error. Smaller container file as in a few gigabyte, can be completed successfully. I believe its a network issue as i am connected thru a powerplug.

Therefore, i decided to created the container file in another USB HDD and copy it over thru the network.
Again i am faced with network instability and operation failed. i tried both FTP and CIFS.

My last option is to plug the HDD directly into FreeNAS mount it and copy the container file to FreeNas.

Problem

When the HDD plug in, it flashed. Indicating the drive is physically detected by the FreeNAS.
But when i do a dmesg. i dont see the HDD. Therefore, i cannot mount the HDD.

Import Volume also did not display the HDD. I think it is normal since the drive was not detected in Dmesg in the first place.

All the equipment are functional. I am sure of it.

What did i do wrongly, any pointers appreciated.

I think your best bet is to fix your network. Powerline networking sucks. For the time being, you can take a CAT6 cable and directly attach your computer to your FreeNAS appliance and transfer. It'll probably be faster and less error-prone than trying to use USB with NTFS.

Yes, that is one simple and effective solution.
But i am taking this mounting exercise as a learning lesson.
Problem is i have too much data on the NAS, And i want to be sure before trying.

That is why i am sseking pointers if i have overlook any things

Powerline sucks both in performance and reliability. They are the "I'm freakin' desperate" option for networking. It sounds like you are needing reliability and a little less desperate for something that kind-of works. ;)

You are absolutely right. The task was completed within 8 hours when using Cat 5e, and error free.

But my NAS and Computer are in different rooms. SAD and not choice. Ha Ha.

Any want have a idea what i did wrongly with the USB HDD? i am still puzzles over it. Thanks.
