I have just noticed that my FreeNAS box halted about six hours ago.

Is there any way I can tell what the cause was?

I've just noticed that I can ssh into it... so the box obviously has not stopped although the GUI has and the operator's console is unresponsive

It looks as though just the web interface has stopped. How do I restart it?

Have you tried to reboot the system? Also when asking a question like this, you should provide what version of FreeNAS you are running and you system specs.

Build FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201506042008
Platform Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G3220T @ 2.60GHz
Memory 7960MB

As it happens I did not need to reboot, just to restart django.

So it's a fairly old version (I say that respectfully). Do you reboot the system often or just leave it alone? If it's been running for a very long time, you could have a memory leak (grasping at straws) or some other minor issue. If your system hasn't been rebooted in several months, I'd reboot it for the heck of it. You might even want to run MemTest86 if you think there is a possible problem. Lastly you could update FreeNAS but if it's been working all this time, why change it. I'm never in a hurry for a change these days either.
