Hey all

I've been using Freenas for a little while now. It's just a basic 4x2TB drives in raid 0 using freenas 8.0.4.

I want to know how I can create a partition on that volume so I can separate my work stuff from the rest while still using that storage space.

Any help would be appreciated.

That doesn't work. Ok let me elaborate a little more. I use that space to store all my ripped blu ray movies on (which I own!) and then I use Plex media server on a different pc to share those movies to all my household devices.

The problem is when plex updates its self it now has to run through my backup dataset which contains lots of little file and accounts for half the time it takes plex to scan my nas. I want to exclude my backup folder from plex. I had tried making a data set before asking this question and it didn't help. Plex just see's the dataset as a folder in my "Movies" share. Judging by the UNC name that Freenas gives the dataset it looks like it is just a folder.

I need a separate partition so plex doesn't scan my work when looking for media.

Datasets make subpartitions of a volume. They appear like subdirectories, but can have a max size (quota), and various other settings.
Trouble is that all your data is currently in the parent volume, which you have shared. So you just see a subfolder, right?

You can rearrange your data into two datasets, ie make the datasets then move everything into the right place. But you don't actually need that...

Easiest thing to do is just make another share of your "rips" folder, and point plex at that. Job done. You can still mess with the rips folder from the Movies share, too.
