I use my old pc to run FreeNAS 11. I have 50gb ssd for the os, and a 3 Tb wd red as storage. My system is mainly used as a long term storage for backup of my desktop and couple of laptops. I have just acquired a new wd red 3 Tb. How should I add this new drive to the system? Please advise. Thanks.

You can either (1) search here for how to add the second disk as a mirror of the first, which you'd have to do at the command line; (2) create a second pool with the second disk; or (3) add the second disk to the first, creating a single striped volume. (1) is the safest for your data; (3) is the most risky but gives you best use of your disk space.

Thanks for your reply. It is really a hard choice. Given the fact that my FreeNAS will not be on 24x7, and I only turn it on to do backup maybe once a month, do you think (2) is a compromise between (1) and (3)?
