How should I test the HDD BEFORE/(immediately after) making a new pool?

Has failed with change faulted disk for a new one, decided to destroy the pool & re-compile it from the beginning & restore from backup.
Question.
What tests I should make BEFORE / (just after) the pool's creations? (Before to fill it by information)
To be sure that all cables/HDD etc., in a good state.
