Hello,
I used freenas about a year ago to make use of some old ide drives and an old pc. Since then, my pc died and I'd like to retrieve my files from my drives. I'm pretty sure I used ZFS, and windows/Linux won't recognize them on my sabrent ide/usb converter. Is there any way of accessing these drives without taking another of my computers and installing/setting up freenas to it?

Thanks
Tony

I am a newbie my self but here goes...

Did you have encryption turned on?
If yes, I think you can access the data only via freeNAS (you need the encryption key from the original setup).

There are versions of Linux (not in mainline) with ZFS support, but I am not sure if it can access FreeNAS disks

Use FreeNAS and get it over with. It's not like you need a hard drive to install FreeNAS to.

Well, I got out another computer that had Linux mint, which got me to the zfs fuse, still won't recognize the disks. I tried to install freenas on the only x64 pc I have to mess with and it wouldn't install to my 16gb sandisk usb or the hdd. Am I just screwed?

Can't you find any computer that will boot FreeNAS from USB? You can use your old OS drive.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I downloaded freenas, burned to disc, booted into it, and tried to install it on my usb so I could try exactly that. Refuses to write on it, saying that I have to manually correct an error, and that the error is the disk is part of the pool. I removed the usb and formatted it on my other pc, but got the same problem. I would try it on my other computer, but I just put it together, and I'm concerned I'll goof something up and lose something on the main drive. Is that a valid concern?

Can't you use the old OS drive? That'll save you some trouble. If not, image a USB drive with the 9.2.1.9 image (use something like USB Image Tool).

Won't install to the old os drive, either. I've tried two usb tools and in both cases, the pc tells me "attempting to boot from USB device. An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system." I have disconnected all drives. I think it's about time to give up.
Thanks for your help

First, I hope you had backups.

Second, get a USB 2 drive (not USB 3) and write the FreeNAS image to it. Boot up, import the volume and recover your data.

You need to create your own thread as your issue has nothing to do with this thread.
