Hot Swapping Drives

I've got 4 hot swappable 4TB drives in a RAID1 Configuration (I think, it's been a while since I looked at it), where both sets of 2 drives are mirrored, making an 8TB array.
A week ago, I lost network access, and the local display kept giving drive error messages. I unplugged the drives, and I can now access things remotely. I'm booting from a USB drive, and was concerned that might have been the issue, so I attached another USB drive, and after a few hours it looked like it mirrored the boot drive to the new USB drive. Now, what I'd like to do is plug drives in one at a time, for two reasons. One, to maintain network access, and two, to verify which drive is having an issue (I numbered them, but have learned to always double check everything). Assuming there are no network reads/writes, can I plug and unplug drives without breaking the RAID? Are there limitations? Can I boot without drives, then add them? Or is it better to boot with them, and remove them?
Thanks!
