I would guess that it's doing some smart checks.
In the webui go to Tasks -> S.M.A.R.T. Tests

This is what mine looks like

Also, please post more information about your system, like the version, etc, so other (smarter) users can help.

I'd also like to point out the error message in the webui console - it could be a red herring but may shed some light?

Call me naive, but under normal conditions, and excluding any bugs, I thought SMART selftests should not contribute anything to the system's CPU usage. It's run by the drive's firmware itself, and other than receiving the command from the OS to intiate a SMART selftest, it remains contained within the drive.

Is this hinting at a bug with the software package smartmontools?

UPDATE: On second though, it could also be the card that you have your drives plugged into. See this forum thread for reference, which appears to be the same issue you are facing: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/smartctl-running-at-100-cpu-after-only-20mins.93453/

What is your hardware configuration? Someone versed in HBA cards might be able to answer more confidentally.

If you see that post I have the same card. Areca is not an odd ball card. I have that card an am using a supermicro server which may have that same backplane. I am going to try my areca card in another machine to see what happens. 1 machine will be a newer supermicro, one will be a dell 710/720.

I have ordered some dell h200's which have been flashed and will try that out in this one supermicro server which is having issues.

As for software version it is the latest as of 7/7/2021

Everything that is not an LSI HBA is an oddball card. People have tried pretty much everything else under the sun and there's always something broken.
