Hi

Took on an IT job a few days ago, hadn't even managed to get my feet under the table, and the clients primary NAS has completely failed. Its an old 8.3 release, but 99.99% of the web UI doesn't work, and all I get is a non-descriptive warning. All 16 drives seem to be fine. It had about 30 volumes on it, and now I just see one, and its is unable to tell me the size or anything about it - and I cant read anything.

I have never used FreeNAS before, and need a guru to try and help me recover the data. The company were typically sold this box, and was informed their data would be as safe as houses (pity nobody ever configured it, no scrubs, no backups, no replications). As you can imagine, I am getting the blame for this - despite the fact I have never been near it.

I managed to get off about 5TB of the 20TB of data (very slowly) before it went completely AWOL, need to recover the rest - plenty of additional storage available on a second NAS (Not freeNAS) server.

I am not particularly OK with BSD (I have never used and Linux in anger). There is $$$ available if somebody can help me out of this jam, and you can either talk me through it, or I can offer remote access (via VPN) and there is a man to do hard resets available 24x7.

Please post full hardware list.

Unfortunately, unless I start pulling it all apart, I have no idea - All I know is its a Supermicro Built system, and it has 16 x 2TB Barracuda's. It was built in 2012, FreeNAS is on a USB stick.

Ill start pulling it apart tomorrow. I have three systems exactly the same (The other two - which were supposed to be backups - had already failed and been taken offline before I arrived).

Just one advice: run! run out of this company!

In the mean time you can use dmidecode to output the system specs without taking it apart ;)

SMART data suggests they're SAS drives. So while you're at it, give us the output of sas2flash -listall

(I'm hoping 8.3 already included sas2flash)

SMART data suggests they're SAS drives. So while you're at it, give us the output of sas2flash -listall

(I'm hoping 8.3 already included sas2flash)

sas2flash doesn't seem to be in 8.3 :( Ill have to get the actual drive details when I am physically next to the box.

Sorry I said the drives were Seagate (that's what I'v put in my new NAS) this unit uses - 15 x SAMSUNG HD204UI (and a single WDC WD2001FASS-00W2B as an unused spare drive in slot 15)

Can you run zpool status and post the results inside code tags (or just paste a screen shot)?

Based on the information you pasted above, it appears the drives are connected to an Areca raid controller. I believe that explains the difficulty accessing SMART information, and may significantly limit your recovery options. You can use "areca-cli" to access smart data for your drives. I believe you can get a list of available commands by typing "areca-cli" and then entering "help" or "-h". I found the manual for areca-cli here: http://www.farm.particle.cz/twiki/pub/VS/DiskovaPole/Areca_CLIManual.pdf You should try to view smart data and system event logs. It'll give a better idea about what is going on.

Feel sorry for you. Sounds like you caught the hot potato of some bad hardware purchasing and configuration decisions.
