Hello everyone

I recently built a file/media server and chose to use Freenas. I am excited to see what can be done specifically with Jails. I have used linux in the past (Slackware, Debian), never BSD though. I am very new to Raid in any form. I am upgrading from a synology, 2 disk NAS.

Below is my server hardware:

-Cooler Master Cosmos II - Ultra Tower Computer Case with Aluminum and Steel Body (RC-1200-KKN1)
-EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G1, 80+ GOLD 650W, Fully Modular, Power Supply 120-G1-0650-XR
-Supermicro ATX DDR4 LGA 2011 Motherboards X10SRI-F-O
-Noctua i4 CPU Cooler for Intel Xeon CPU_ LGA2011, 1356 and 1366 Platforms NH-U9DXi4
-Intel Xeon E5 Quad Core Processor 3.5 4 LGA 2011 BX80644E51620V3
-3 of Samsung DDR4-2133 16GB/2Gx72 ECC/REG CL15 Server Memory (M393A2G40DB0-CPB0)
-Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E250B/AM)

Will use in mirror config for 12 TB of storage (really about 10.6 :))
-6 of HGST HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 4 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM SATA Internal Enterprise Hard Drive 64 MB Buffer 6.0Gb/s - HUS724040ALA640 / 0F14688 64 MB Cache

Will use synology NAS as backup
-2 of WD Red 6TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch WD60EFRX

Thanks for having me. Hope everyone is having a great day!

Welcome aboard. Looks like you got the hardware part of it figured out just fine. Jails are awesome, probably one of the most fun things I've learned about since finding FreeNAS a few years ago. Unfortunately in the next version of FreeNAS they are being replaced with virtualization via bhyve and docker. Oh well progress waits for no one right?

I wonder if it'd be possible to do the following:

1) use warden CLI tools to export the jail to a file
2) create a freebsd bhyve VM with warden CLI tools installed.
3) use warden CLI tools to import the jail
4) do a happy dance

But you'd still be missing all the cool easy to use GUI elements of the current setup in FreeNAS. Even the Warden GUI was easy to use in PC-BSD. Meh, I'll probably stick with 9.whatever for the forseable future or at least until FreeBSD 10.3 is no longer supported.

Everything I have read about jails vs docker was that jails rocks over docker. As I dont have much knowledge on the subject, do you know why the switch?
