Doesn't the hardware recommendations guide address this? Any LSI/Broadcom/Avago 2008/2308/3008-based controller should do the job.

Since FreeNAS likes direct access to drives, the card needs JBOD mode, yes?

No. That is a hardware RAID card, NOT an HBA.
You need one like this:

Only, you may not need the forward breakout. Did you have the SFF-8087 on the drive side also?

How many drive backplanes? Where is you build log?
