Hello everybody,

I am new to the forum and to NAS in general.

I have been thinking for a while now about building a homemade nas that would mainly be used for:
- Storage (obviously :) )
- Streaming HD (1080p) movies using Plex
- Distant acces to my files
- Web server

I wanted to have your feedback about the hardware i chose.I want to know if it is fully compatible with freenas.

- Fractal Design Node 304
- Motherboard: Asus P8h77-I
- Processor: Intel pentium G2020
- Ram: 8Go DDR3
- WD RED 2TO 64Mo 3"5 6g/s
- power supply: Seasonic G-360

Thank you for your help

You need ECC RAM and motherboard that supports ECC RAM and a minimum 4 HDD to use RAIDZ2. Good luck googling all that stuff

I didn't say I wanted ECC, nor RAID config, which by the way I know quite well (I am an electronics and network engineer).

Try reading the question before answering, I was asking about compatibility of my hardware with freenas.

FYI, ECC is not compulsory for freenas, I I will not put critical info on it, so ...

Hi, is freenas not running on every piece of hardware? is it very specific? I have an HP xw8200 with 8GB ECC RAM; a SSD for OS; onboard SCSI off; 3ware 9650SE 16ML Raidcontroller with 4x500GB SATA2 drives. It should be an testing environment for freenas. BIOS Mobo is latest. For now the newest Version of freenas hangs by boot from CD with showing CD-ROM is from BIOS Cd0 and after this nothing happen....?!?

ECC RAM is a requirement if you want ZFS to be reliable and safe with your data. Please download and read the FreeNAS manual at doc.freenas.org.

Well,

WD RED is OK.
G2020 is OK.
Case and PSU can not be 'not compatible'

The only things left are motherboard and RAM.

Looks like the board works fine.

As for ECC ram and RAIDZ2. This is just general recommendation. If you want your data to be safe. Why just not stick your USB HDD to router and setup network share? Problem solved. Imagine yourself coming to Formula 1 and asking if your bike will work on the track. It may work. But poorly. So why bother with FreeNAS?

Hope it helps.

See that sticky about hardware suggestions at the top of the forum? That was meant for you.
