Hardware is getting a little too old for my liking and power supply could be improved.

For a backup-only system, you might consider:
  • base model Dell PowerEdge T20 with G3220 and 4GB
  • add 4GB RAM for 8GB total
  • add 4x 3TB WD Red in RAIDZ1

You could quantify that as it seems like a throw away comment with no justification as to why the PSU could be better or whats wrong with older hardware?

The FreeNAS box i have at the moment is on a n54L and is basically never really CPU taxed. I also need to make sure it doesnt draw more than 250w at peak as ill need another UPS which I'm trying not to spend money on

I don't RZ1 with large drives, its just asking for trouble especially when one fails and you need a rebuild. Im merely looking not for a replication server but a whole backup system i can just drop the drives and USB stick into in the unlikely event of a failure of hardware on my primary box.

I already backup my data to an external disk thats then checksummed and stored offsite

VX350? That stuff is unbelievably crappy. At the very least, get a CS450. Ideally, get something like a Seasonic G-450.

Thank you for all of your advice and guidance. Ive managed to pick up a really cheap 2nd hand dell Powered with an Ivy Bridge Xeon at its heart for under £100
