But I'm not running any jails or anything like that.

Pulling the HBA means I can't access the data at all... not much of a test if the data isn't being used as normal.

If this is happening once a day, I'm sure you can easily identify where the problem lies. Take some downtime on the Nas for a while (you can use your backup if needed ;) ). Then do the very obvious thing of pulling the HBA. Boot it up and see if it locks after a day without the HBA attached. Yes, it will not directly diagnose the HBA itself, but as many things are pointing this direction it's an ideal start point.

Whilst it also won't directly address the issue on hand, if I got this annoyed (which you are, based on your tone in the above posts) I'd have saved my config, wiped my install and installed from scratch and restored the config. This clearly doesn't resolve the underlying issue, but atleast it will help remove any nasty conflicts from incompatible packages which may have slipped the net.

It is much of a test. As it will still resolve if the conflict is occurring without the HBA installed. Which in itself then diagnoses if it's a HBA or further down the chain problem, or not. I'll repeat, for clarity, use your backup, for a day, if necessary.

Packages still exist on the 'complete freenas install' which are in addition to the freenas base install, irrespective of jail's etc... As such a conflict could still exist.

If you think that data being accessed is causing the freezing then address this. Remove mount points instead. You need to do some work and be methodical. I admit I'm not the guru on freenas, or even computing in general, but taking logical steps towards diagnosis is something I can do.

If you can help narrow down what is causing the freezing this is obviously of benefit to everyone, particularly yourself. As you've said yourself above, without access to the console this is going to be difficult, so a more pragmatic approach, imo, is required.
