I tried installing version 9.2.1.5 on a 2008 Mac Pro with a 120gb SSD and had the same problem. I booted from an Ubuntu 12.04.3 installation disc and launched Gparted. I then created a new partition table on the target installation drive using each scheme available: ms-dos, amiga, solaris, BSD, etc. I ran the gamut - each and every one. And the last one I did was BSD but I'm not sure that is necessary. I then re-installed and had no trouble after that.

Cheers.

I ran into this issue with 9.10 (copy of prod) while setting up a Hyper-V guest to try something out. Since I don't do the installation every day, I didn't notice that the installation failed shortly after the base_os step where it had worked in the past. Both cases were from a brand new VM, so weirdness about zeroizing the disk or installing something else on the disk didn't work either. Neither did selecting thin or full provisioning.
What caused my version of this bug was that the root password I chose had special characters that apparently gums up the installer. When I chose root/root, I found myself prompted for the BIOS vs UEFI choice, whereas I was apparently not getting that either with the more complex password. I've downloaded FreeNAS 11, and will file a bug if the installer is still parsing the password.

I know this topic hasn't been edited in a while, but I'm not seeing the same. I THOUGHT I had a mirror of my boot drives (both 8GB flash drives) but I too am seeing the mountroot issue.

I tried finding a "unix live" iso that I could boot that would have ZFS support but haven't found one yet. But I did find an older flash drive, that I had considered to be "failing" that was able to boot my freenas system, but I'm sure it's a rev or two back.

What I'm hoping is that I can repair the non-booting flash drives, with unix utilities on the bootable one, and then go back to using them. My problem is my lack of unix knowledge. I am, however very techie and support windows and macs for a living, so clear, but techie answers/hints can go a long way without explanation.

Mostly, I'm trying to figure out how to FSCK the two partitions on the bootable flash drives, and if necessary, have gpart[ed] repair the partition table.

I do see that when booting another unix, I can see two partitions on the primary flash drive, the first one being 512MB and the second just the remainder. I can't mount either as they get reported as being "zfs_member" and the Ubuntu/Linux doesn't know anything about zfs.

So, how do I determine the flash drive device name after inserting it, and what commands would you suggest I run on y booted Freenas, to potentially repair those drives?

Thanks so much!

if it helps, I did try entering ufs:/dev/da0p1 for a device for mountroot and it reports failed with error 22
If I try zfs:/dev/da0p1 (or p2, or the mirror drive, da1p1) I get failed with error 5, but I also get a solaris notice, "Cannot find the pool label for ' "
