A few years ago before building my first FreeNAS server, I researched full-disk encryption on FreeNAS and followed the advice of the general consensus which was to just use encrypted TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt containers for sensitive data. Fast forward to 2017 and I'm wondering if we're still at a point where full-disk encryption in FreeNAS 11 is a risky option. Are the chances of some mishap causing complete data loss still fairly high?

Have you taken a look to these?

There is work on OpenZFS for native dataset encyption. This, in theory, would be less risky than external device encryption. But, native ZFS dataset encryption is not yet ready and may not show up in FreeNAS for a year. Even then, a conservative approach would be to wait, and let other people test, (aka loose), their data by using the feature.
