Hey guys. I am running Freenas 9.2 and I am trying to use FTP to share some files with a friend of mine. When I am doing testing locally and when he is trying to connect to my ftp server in freenas using a web url like ftp://

This is the error I am getting. It doesn't happen all the time. SECURITY VIOLATION: Passive connection from host rejected.

What does this mean? How can I fix it?

Don't use a passive connection.. I wouldn't use unprotected ftp.. Why not use sftp? I'm confused are you using the command line or an actual FTP program on a client computer to connect to freenas box?

Just using a browser and putting ftp://Ipaddress into a browser. The person I am trying to help out is not computer savy at all and will not know how to go download an ftp program. I just want to be able to send them a link that they click on and it opens up in a browser. It works sometimes and I can download but other times I get the security violation error. I found some information about proftpd that there is a line about allowing foreign connections but everytime I change it to yes freenas puts it back to no.

Working half the time seems odd.. Are you running 9.2.0 stable? Are you using home directories etc?

You should not directly edit the proftpd.conf file. Use the Auxiliary parameters field in the Advanced section of FTP Settings.
