I'm curious to understand more about how FreeNAS is versioned. I've not been able to find a concise explanation of this. This is my interpretation of it at present. Can someone please clarify or elaborate?

Code:
FreeNAS 11.3-U2.1
        ^ ^ ^ ^
        | | | |
        | | | Hotfixes
        | | Bugfixes
        | FreeNAS major release
FreeNAS is built on this FreeBSD version

I recall seeing something about this when Corral was in development (since they were departing from the first part (FreeNAS 10 but FreeBSD 11).

The quick correction after that story put us back on track for the first part as you list it... maybe even the second as linked to the first (but not in lockstep necessarily).

The last 2 are anyone's guess, but the final point release represents an emergency/significant bugfix as far as I can see.

I don't think you can characterize all update releases as Bugfixes, since there are features also delivered in many of those.

Thanks @sretalla. I've revised my thinking based on your input.

Code:
FreeNAS 11.3-U2.1
        ____ ^ ^
          | | |
          | | Hotfix = emergency/significant bugfix
          | Features, improvements and bugfixes
FreeNAS is generally based on this FreeBSD release

This is the current state of affairs, but will change with TrueNAS Core 12.0.
This will be based on FreeBSD 12.1 if it (TrueNAS Core) is released in the near future, but will continuously track FreeBSD 12.2, 12.3, ... while keeping the TrueNAS version number.

Kind regards
Patrick
