Hey all

I've setup plex in FreeNAS when I had plex setup on my computer I had the port forwarding setup with a firewall rule with my computers IP address, now that I'm using plex in FreeNAS I have to change the firewall rule but what IP address do I use?

I've tried the one I've used to login for free as and also they one for the plex plug in but they doesn't seem to work could someone point me in the right direction?

You use the IP address of the jail that plex is installed in.

I ask you to apply some logic here to the question at hand.

If the Plex service is running on its own IP address, and you access it via this IP address, why would the port forward be anything but this IP address the service is running on?

Plex plugin is a jail. A jail can be thought of as another computer on your network. It gets its own IP address and has its own services listening on it's own ports. If you want to forward a port to something, you have to forward it to a port that is actively listening and running a service for the remote application to connect.

I would recommend you setup a VPN. The instructions are excellent. You will be able to access your plexserver securely and an other jails on your network.

No one uses a VPN with Plex. The entire point of Plex is to have access to your connect and share it with friends without any complicated setup.

So would the best way to share your Plex is by opening the 32400 port on the router and inviting a user to the plexserver? Is that a security problem?

You are trusting the Plex server to not have a vulnerability. Which is probably OK since every single install is exposed to the internet.
