FreeNAS or already TrueNAS?

Hey together,
now only found discussions on reddit about it.

But the question to you: Would you already use TrueNAS for a new installation or prefer FreeNAS?

Tomorrow I am going to setup my Backup-Server (Fujitsu TX140 S2, Xeon 1230 V3, 32GB ECC RAM, so proper hardware by the requirements), but yet I am not so sure, if I should already use TrueNAS or better still FreeNAS.
What do you say? What i definately want to use: ENCRYPTION and REPLICATION, all the rest i don't need for the Backup-machine (like Jails etc.). I just want it to be running carefree like my FreeNAS data-server (with which I am perfectly happy!).

Give me your advise! :)

Cheers

Take a look here at the schedule: TrueNAS 12.0 Schedule. It depends on your risk tolerance. Myself, I'm waiting until release in October (and then a couple of weeks) before I move from FN to TN. If I had another box to play around with I'd be installing TN betas now and provide feedback on any issues to make the product better.

All the best,
Mike

I run a couple jails and some SMB shares and the BETA2 has been flawless for me .. the upgrade was seamless as well jumping from Free to True .. so if concerns .. just run Free for now and upgrade later

What i definately want to use: ENCRYPTION
At very least, if you do go with FreeNAS in the interim, don't do that yet... and be prepared to rebuild your pool as an encrypted one with TrueNAS Core.

If you want encryption, TrueNAS Core. It’d be prudent to wait for another 2 weeks and go with RC1 - that said, beta2.1 is remarkably stable.

There is a known issue with bhyve where it “loses the plot” when you restart or halt a VM. Just be aware of that. I don’t hold high hopes it’ll be fixed in RC1. For release, though, I really am rooting for that bug to be squashed.

My general rule of thumb from before working for iX was:
1) if your livelihood depends on the stability of a particular FreeNAS server, don't run pre-release versions on that hardware in production
2) if your livelihood depends on the stability of a particular FreeNAS server, actively beta-test pre-release versions (just not in production - this can even be done with VMs). This gives you the opportunity to ensure that the features that are critical for you work properly, and also gives an opportunity to give back to the community (by helping us have a better / more stable release).

This can probably be stated more cleanly.

Oh yes, and "data whose integrity is critical to maintaining one's relationship with one's spouse" can be substituted for "livelihood" above. They often work out to be the same thing.

Hey together,
thanks to everyone for sharing your opinions and ideas about it!
I now tried TrueNAS for a short run and decided: I'll stay on FreeNAS on my main-server (until TrueNAS is out in a stable release) and my Backup-server will be TrueNAS.

The encryption is a MUST for me, already for RMA cases for hard drives or if the server is just stolen (I don't like my data to be with an unknown person haha).
And the encryption-feature seems much better with TrueNAS (i also read already, that they changed the whole way of encrypting drives from FreeNAS -> FreeNAS). It's really crazy, how fast it is mounting the encrypted pool, in comparison to FreeNAS and also the Two-Factor authentification in TrueNAS i really like.

So for now:
Main-Server, which should just ran stable = FreeNAS
Backup-machine = TrueNAS
