TrueNas 12 with Encryption on Microserver Gen8 (Non AES-NI CPU) ?

Hi,

I have an HP Microserver Gen8 (Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G1610T @ 2.30GHz) which I understand is not an AES-NI CPU. It's an old FreeNas 11 box (without encryption) that I am planning to rebuild with TrueNas 12. I like the idea of encrypted datasets, which seems to work fine on my Gen10 Plus, but it is my understanding that without AES-NI compliance the CPU may get hit hard with encrypted datasets, and the CPU isn't that great by modern standards.

Has anyone done this with success or can advise on the likely outcome ? I guess one way is to try it and see, but would prefer some knowledgeable advice up front.

Cheers,

John

You could try "openssl speed aes" in the console for an estimate.

Thanks for that tip - I did try it and it's 5x slower than on my Gen10+ - basically I'll give it a miss :)

I will play musical NAS systems and move stuff around, which will free up a Gen10 server which should work ok.

Cheers,

John
