I purchased a FreeNAS Mini back in 2014 and haven't performed any updates since then. I know that 11.1 is out now with 11.2 just around the corner and I wanted to start the updates process. I read somewhere that I need to go to 9.3 before 11. The biggest issue however is that the Mini doesn't have a removable USB (from what I can tell) and there are no "update" options in the webgui either. Can someone recommend (or link me) how to upgrade my Mini? There are 2 usb slots on the front, do I just configure a USB drive and plug it in there? How do I go about moving it to the internal onboard memory so I don't always have the USB sticking out the front? Sorry for all the noobie questions, I honestly picked this up on recommendation and beyond my Plex/Sickbeard/Sabnzbd and Shared drives, I rarely touch the configuration.

Also - I considered upgrading hardware and building a new box from scratch but after reviewing what's in this little guy, I wonder if it's even worth doing a new custom build? I do need to swap out for larger drives but that's a separate help request.

  • Save a backup of your config database.
  • Download the installer of your desired version (I'd probably go with 11.1-U6, the latest release).
  • Burn that to a USB stick, boot your FreeNAS Mini from that stick.
  • Install to your built-in SATA DOM that the Mini uses as a boot device. You should be given the option to "upgrade"; choose that.
  • When installation is complete, remove the USB stick and reboot.

Thanks - one more quick question. How do I save the config? All the videos and tutorials I saw showed a save config button in System but I don't have that.
