freenas hanging

I have installed freenas on a quad core amd system with the following specs

Asus m4a78-e
4 gb ram
(6) 2 tb sata wesdern digital green drives

new build of 8.2 freenas
software raid 5

the machine hangs after copying large amounts of data to it.

i can ping it but cant go to website and cannot putty to it anymore.

also pings went from 1ms to 900+ from a machine in the next plug onm the switch

any ideas?

Do you have a monitor attached to the machine?

If it hangs, there might be some error messages shown on the screen.

Unless you mean it completely freezes, in which case I have not a clue.

ok here is the panic I discovered on the screen when I got home. "panic: kmem_malloc(131072): kmem_map too small: 263913472 total allocated"

I read somewhere this is a problem where bulk data transfer causes memory depletion and setting an entry in loader.conf fixes this. Is there an easy way to do this on 8.2?

get more memory, at least 8GB if you use zfs
