Hi, just updated to FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201505130355. On rebooting I got a SMART alert immediately appear. It seems odd but possible that it coincided with the update.

The Volume reports healthy.

I'm tempted to reboot again but concerned I'll bork it completely. Any advice??

  • CRITICAL: Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
  • CRITICAL: Device: /dev/ada3, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate.

Hi Eric, sorry to ask then disappear, got called away

My reading is "Handling Damage" (because it occurs throughout the report !!!) Just FYI it never reported before and no handling in the meantime and only occurred after the patch change.

I presume though it means off to buy a new disk (or three). Its an HP Microserver, so looking at HP 3Gb Reds * 3 unless any other advice recommended? (Primarily serves as a backup repository)

Well, the short tests are failing, so it's definitely on the way out.

Also, don't run a short test every hour. That is way excessive and brings you nothing - short tests are probably useless. I just run them once a day because they're essentially free, when the server isn't loaded.

I would heed the warning and first flash new firmware before trusting the test results.

I just ran the short test hrly to get it running, not longterm

I'd rather protect from failure so despite 300 UKP outlay I think I'll do that (as I'm at 89% capacity in any case and was contemplating expanding... I see you have 3Gb Reds so hopefully you approve:smile:

Didn't that FreeNAS upgrade auto-activated SMART? It may have caused data loss according to these articles.

Easier said than done, when it comes to hard drives.
