I've been running Freenas 9.3 for a while and have no issues, other than the marginally annoying flashing yellow light in the corner telling me to upgrade to 9.10 stable.. and I just want to know if I'm going to have any nasty surprises if I do it.

My setup:

Intel Xeon E3-1220
Supermicro X10SL7-F
IBM SAS card

Plugins:
Emby
Transmission
SickRage

Jails:
A standard Jail running the MySQL database for my KODI clients
a virtualbox jail running an instance of Pihole

the reason I'm asking is when I upgraded from 8-9 (I think, may have been an older verson to v8) when it booted back up I found out the jails had changed and poof they were all gone... I'll admit probably my fault for not reading more closely or having done something horribly wrong.

Thanks

Did you try your upgrade yet? If not, be aware that the ABI changed between 9.3 and 9.10.

The jails should mostly work but the abi changed so results may vary. Rebuilding your jails is the way to go but you might not have to.

So what does the ABI do? Is that the O's version the jails are baised on?

And worst case how would I go about rebuilding my jails?

It's the interface between userspace and the kernel. Since your jails are 9.3 userspace when you update the kernel will be using freebsd 10 interface. They are usually similar and still work but they are not meant to work together. There are edge cases where things behave strangely. You might not have issues though.
