I haven´t seen any report similar to this one, so here it goes.

I have freenas 9.1.1, recently added some USB hard disks as part of a pool.

I decided to create 2 jails: 1 for my DLNA server, and the other for the Transmission client.

However, every day the OS would report that the hard disks were disconnected with an error, and also the freeNAS couldn´t be discovered on either the apple computers - something odd with the AFP protocol.

It seems like AFP is not capable of listening incoming connections in only one IP, even if the NIC has 3 different IP¡´s.

On the other hand, the Jails seem to have a negative effect on the USB hard disk, causing it to crash, leaving the user with no choice but to reboot to *temporarily* correct the error, before it materializes again.

Solution? Get rid of the Jails. They´re cool, but maybe are not the best.

I don't think USB disks were ever meant to be included in a zpool. They're portable by nature and that's not a good thing for any RAID configuration, not to mention the extra overhead USB further incurs on top of everything.

My solution for you would be to actually use normal hard drives instead of USB ones. Reason why you haven't seen any similar report is probably because most people here don't run zpools with USB hard disks.
