Hi all, this is my first post here. Unfortunately its to ask for help. I built my freeNAS server a couple years ago and pretty much didn't touch it since then. I came home to find it like this the other day and I have no idea where to start. I did some searching but couldn't find anything obvious.

I'm running an AMD mobo, crucial SSD for the OS, and WD black drives for storage. I have not had to troubleshoot anything since I built it, it just worked. I am a complete noob.

I'm really hoping my pools are ok and I'd like to upgrade to 9.3 assuming my hardware will work. I see AMD is absolutely not recommended but I must have gotten lucky the last couple years.

Please help! Thanks in advance

How much RAM, and what filesystem is your data volume? If the former is less than 8 or 12 GB, or the latter is UFS, you aren't a good candidate for 9.3. For now, try a fresh installation of 8.2 to a new USB stick, and import your saved backup config file.

I currently have 8GB ram and its a ZFS filesystem. Is there any way to pull the config file off my other drive, assuming its intact? I either did not make a backup or have misplaced it since then.

+1

The picture indicates failure to mount the ufs device which should be your boot drive.
Forget upgrading to 9.3 for now, your configuration file can be found on the pool,
but first you have to get it mounted before you can pull off a copy. Follow danb35's advice.

Oh sorry I misunderstood, the storage drives are ZFS. I have made a new USB to boot off of and can get to the console screen. Beyond that I am nervous to destroy my info. Any advice how to get my old drive mounted to get to the config file? Or is there a (safe)manual way to get back to my files with the new USB stick?

I am curious about a couple of things though if you don't mind...
Has the SSD been the boot drive the entire time (since it was built).
What brand and model number is the SSD drive.
I ask because the type of flash chips and type of controller in the SSD
may explain why it failed after such a short time.

The configuration file is on the 4th partition of your boot device. The file name is: freenas-v1.db

If you can rescue the file from your old boot device, you can use the webGUI to restore it.

Its a 32gb Crucial V4. They have not held up too well unfortunately. :(

@228studio I'm gonna bow out here and let @gpsguy handle this. He's got similar hardware
and an older FreeNAS version and almost 2,300 posts ;)

I followed those directions but get a mount panic when I try to mount the old drive, then I tried sticking the drive in an enclosure and going through USB but it wont show up in the directory for some reason.

Thanks for the help so far everyone. I have a feeling this might be a frustrating learning experience.

Edit: I just looked at the drive with UFS explorer and it says unable to read root folder. Am I screwed?

First, relax a bit, your data should be safe.

All we're trying to do is rescue the configuration file, so that you don't have to reconfigure the settings. If you had a backup of the file (many of us automate this) or had 9.3.x, which keeps a backup on the volume, it wouldn't be an issue.

I'm not familiar with UFS explorer. Can you tell it to look at the 4th partition on the SSD? That's where the file is located.

When you had the drive in the USB enclosure, did you try doing a "camcontrol devlist" from the FreeNAS shell, and did it see the drive? Since you have a SSD it should be obvious which device it is.

If you want/need to give up on trying to rescue your configuration file, skip to the section below.
---------

After you booted from your new USB device, did it get an IP address from DHCP? If not, you'd have to configure your network interface, using option #1 on the console setup menu.

You should be able to access the webGUI, using admin as the username and ?? as the password. Refer to the doc's for the default password - I can't remember if it is blank or something else. If you don't have the 8.2 docs, you can download it from: http://doc.freenas.org/

Follow the instructions in section 6.3.1 Auto Importing Volumes - ie, Storage -> Volumes -> Auto Import Volume
---------

I need to take a break for a few hours.

Ok after a few more tries I gave up on the old config file. I did get my zfs pool mounted with the new install. Now I am just having trouble getting my AFP share to connect.

Code:
Nov 8 15:58:55 freenas afpd[8321]: AFP/TCP started, advertising 192.168.1.222:548 (2.2.1)
Nov 8 15:59:11 freenas afpd[9737]: AFP3.3 Login by Paul
Nov 8 15:59:17 freenas afpd[9737]: AFP logout by Paul
Nov 8 15:59:17 freenas afpd[9737]: dsi_stream_read: len:0, unexpected EOF
Nov 8 15:59:17 freenas afpd[9737]: afp_over_dsi: client logged out, terminating DSI session
Nov 8 15:59:17 freenas afpd[9737]: AFP statistics: 0.58 KB read, 0.46 KB written

All is fixed. The problem with the AFP share not connecting was caused by having both a share password and a user password. I took away the share password and only use the user password and the problem is fixed. Thank you everyone for your help!

Also, sir, to one of your original questions which we swept under the rug, are you in fact now running 9.3.1? If not, do you need any help/tips for that?
