FreeNAS 11.3U4.1 to TrueNAS 12.0 Stuck

Hi,

This is my second time trying to update to 12.0. I get stuck here:
truenas-stuck.jpg

It's been here about 6 hours. I can, of course, ctrl+c and get past it but the system is boned. All kinds of python errors, web UI doesn't load (but CLI is fine) and other oddities. What is this script doing? Any way I can monitor it? This is direct IPMI into the server and I can't think of a way to hit another TTY while this is ongoing.

Update: after another several hours it looks like the system finally booted. It's spitting images across the screen being unable to resolve pool.ntp.org, zpool list only shows my boot pool, the web ui redirects HTTP->HTTPS, however the page just says it's unable to connect.

Update: Probably useful if I list some hardware:

Hey @ninjai ... Did you ever solve this? I have the exact same version upgrade woes; 11.3-U5 to 12.0 or 12.0-U1.

I've tried upgrade using GUI, using manual update .tar file and also USB/.iso and select upgrade to both/either of 12.0-RELEASE or 12.0-U1

I get the same situation... hang on /usr/local/sbin/migrate for hours and then only FreeBSD is installed without any of the TN layer.

I have a server built with commodity parts and an HP MicroServer that both exhibit this behaviour.

Thanks for sharing any ideas/suggestions.

Yes, but you're not going to like my answer.

So I battled this one for days, trying various things, nothing worked. One day I said the hell with it and booted back to 11.3 (like I had so many times before) but this time I didn't realize that I forgot to change my default boot environment. Fast forward a week and we just so happen to have a power outage. I can't recall if my NAS shut down gracefully or not, at that time I think the USB port that is connected to my NAS was misconfigured (port number changed on me by itself at some point..)... but in any event it booted back up in about the same timespan it normally would, however the following day I'm surprised when I SSH in and see the mention of "TrueNAS" on the MOTD. Sure enough, it was updated. Haven't looked back since but it's a bizarre one for sure.

Sorry I can't be of more help on this one but I think this is a rare thing to run into since I hadn't heard of anyone else experiencing this issue.

If I were you I would possibly try installing, watch it fail, reboot into 11.3 and leave it for a couple days or something and leave the default boot env alone, then reboot it and see what happens. That's effectively what occurred in my case

What about doing a fresh install of 12-U1 and then importing your config?

This is the kind of problem you sometimes get when the OS is installed on a usb flash drive. Flash drives are notoriously unreliable and most likely to fail when installing a new OS or upgrading from an old one.

Try a different device or install the OS on a small SSD (recommended) - you will be much happier. If you search the forum, you find many, many threads about this...

Yeah, I built this system back in the days of "USB flash drive is recommended". Filled up my SATA ports with drives instead. Either later down the line or next build I'll build with that in mind.

I am booting an old somewhat fiddled with (new motherboard) FreeNAS Mini with these plugged into one of the rear USB 2 sockets:
StarTech.com SM21BMU31C3 M.2 SSD Enclosure for M.2 SATA SSDs, USB 3.1
Transcend 32 GB M.2 SATA III SSD Type 2280 MLC (boot)

The on board DOM had failed. While I did buy a sort-of equivalent I ran into problems powering it.

As it is remote I have not been able to visit it since February. My Windows box down there has crashed. Nobody competent around to push buttons. The FreeNAS Mini and Netgate pfSense firewall carry on chugging.

Several folks have had success using a small SSD attached via USB. You might try that route. if you don't have any available SATA ports. At the very least, I would try installing a fresh image of 12.0 onto a new flash drive. I switched to SSD about two years ago and am very glad I did.

I remember USB not being recommended for ZFS. I know I've had my fair share of issues with using an external hard drive as my snapshot replication destination. Not often but does happen. Usually I can fix it, but once had to restart my replications. As a home user this still beats forking out another 2k on a NAS though.

I'm not talking about using USB for data drives. For a boot device, lots of folks have found that a small SSD connected via USB was much more reliable than a USB thumb drive.

Other than an actual hardware failure, the problems that you describe can all be attributed to the OS on a failing/failed thumb drive. I have even had problems with new USB3 thumbdrives - which is why I switched to an SSD. Nowadays, small SSD's are pretty cheap.

Good luck.

I back up my important data monthly with rsync to a pair of rotating single disk pools which are USB connected and then scrub them. I have been doing this for years, and never had a problem. BUT do not do this with a real pool.
