Why is it I don't feel horribly compelled to upgrade constantly?

I don't know. Until about 5 years ago I wanted bleeding edge at all times. My HTPC is now 6 years old (and still works great as my HTPC), my server is a year old (and only want to upgrade for support for >32GB of RAM) and my laptop is 4 years old. My desktop was 4 years old but I upgraded a few months ago.

First person to simultaneously carry a MacBook Air, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Watch gets a bridge - 50% off!!!!!

That's FIVE exclamation marks of pure savings!

But that's not all - if the iPhone is Gold, you get a free Nelson Ha Ha! If both the iPhone and the watch are gold, you get all that and a 3m tall Steve Jobs statue!

/TV salesman parody

There are two reasons why I still semi-regularly update mobile stuff: because the Web has become painfully slow on the phone or because I could use 50% more battery life on my tablet.

The Haswell-E launch had me contemplating an upgrade from my Nehalem desktop... Then I thought to myself: why?

The sign I hold up in the median says this "will gargle balls for hard drives".

Heh I know the feeling. Although I do upgrade my iPhone every year, but mainly because it also doesn't make sense for me not to since I can get the new one for $200 with the carrier discount and then sell my old one for $400 since they hold such high resale values.

I run my battery into the ground after a year so it's nice to have a fresh battery and latest specs/features too.

I agree with utilizing hardware till it's old and crappy. I haven't posted pics of it yet on the forum, but I rebuilt an old HP xw8600 workstation into a larger case for my FreeNAS build. It was interesting to say the least, as it's fun to see how the proprietary connections that HP uses made me have to MacGuyver a few of the connections to get everything to work. When I got it, it had a single x5460 Xeon in it, and I went on eBay and picked up a second one. Bumped it's RAM up to 16GB and modified the case to take a five slot drivebay. It's def a Frankenstein to say the least... absolutely not power efficient, as it sits around 280W at idle haha...

But it works for me, the ROI of spending the $$ to build a new one doesn't make sense for now. I'm just going to run it till the PSU dies and then build something else out of another used Xeon based box. =D

Priorities change as you get older. With retirement eligibility close at hand my focus now is land. Wish I would have bought land when I was younger pissing it all away on bikes, booze, and stuff. Now I got a bunch of old stuff and nowhere to hunt.

My current desktop is going on 8 years old and is really showing it's age. I will upgrade soon but only out of necessity.

Land is good but even better is to takecare of you health. So that 3000€ bicycle is really a good thing versus some every year buy a new miraclephone.
