Back in the day, I remember Windows file servers had a feature that indexed your file data and when you searched it using a Windows client, it would hit the index to find your data. The search results came back very quickly.

Does FreeNAS have anything like this? Is there a plugin or other utility to make this work?

Well, the closest thing I can find that'll work with FreeNAS is this:

https://www.softperfect.com/products/searchengine/

It's no longer developed, but still offered for free. It runs on Windows.

QNAP and other NAS products have very nice file search options. It is a bit disappointing nothing that nicely integrates with FreeNAS is available.

I think you want "locate32". Google it.

Very cool program, thank you!

Do you know if it works with network paths?

Also, does it run as a Windows service and periodically index your system? If not, how does it get the index?

Sorry brother, don't know much about it. I just know that the cool kids use it to index larger drives...

As an update, I installed this very simple and lean program on Windows and it works great. It's not like the solution QNAP uses but it gets the job done. Oh, and it's free! :)
