Hello

We have massive amounts of files in freenas and we need to manage all of them via ssh everyday.
But installing mc-light or mc is made very hard.
I have read that installing mc or mc-light can be done with jail.
Can i access all the files if my mc or mc-light is installed in jail?
If not, then i would appreciate the help of solving my file managing issue.

Midnight Commander is scheduled to be included in the 9.10.1-U1 release.

See bug/feature #14512. Sorry I can't link to it from my phone.

I question why you need to manage so many files via SSH
I can't answer for OP, but when I need to move files around, doing it through the network shares means the files comes down the wire to my client machine, only to go back up the wire to the FreeNAS box. Samba's smart enough to do the moves locally if they're on the same filesystem, but each dataset is treated as its own filesystem. Moving things locally is simply much faster.

Of course, if we had a web-based file manager, that would be great--but iX doesn't seem to be at all interested in integrating one of those (no doubt for well-founded security reasons).

I understand needing to manage some files from time to time, but consistently having to manage large numbers of files indicates a process issue, and there is a better way to handle that (automation, scripting, software to manage it)

It doesn't help today, but mc will be included in FreeNAS 9.10.1u1: Include Midnight Commander in FreeNAS.

This is really good news since I had installed MC manually in my current setup FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201506042008, and it took some doing... I have not attempted to update FreeNAS because it would have involved manually reinstalling MC, which I was reluctant to do.... If I update to the latest FreeNAS, will it automatically pull in MC?

How should I go about updating from my current release to 9.10-STABLE?

In the web GUI, go to System -> Update, select FreeNAS-9.10-STABLE from the dropdown, and click Check Now. Click Apply Pending Updates when the check is done. Save a copy of your config file first in case things go sideways.
