Above are my logs. This is not a concern specific to the recent update. Just something I'm still trying to work out. The CPU FAN is still running at 100% most of the time. Do I need a better/different fan? The fan is the original that came with the processor. (see "System" for details) The fan at 30% is at 1100 and 1900 according to the spintest log. I don't think this is a script issue. But posting to get some guidance. Thanks...BTW. my house was about 60F during the above logs.

Yes, it seems, by itself, the CPU fan is unable to keep the temperature down near your reference point (which seems low to me at 30 C, but I really have no idea what it should be).

In reality, I think regulating the CPU temp depends somewhat on the peripheral zone too. After all, it doesn't do much good to blow hot air on the CPU.

Your drives are running way cool, so the PER zone is running at minimum duty cycle. Maybe that's because you just started the FreeNAS, and certainly because the ambient temperature is very cool. If the drives don't get warmer and kick up the PER zone a bit, I would consider:
  • reducing the drive temperature setpoint to something just above their actual temperature. The goal would be to have the drives demand a bit more cooling. This should increase PER fans, which will help the CPU fan to be more effective.
  • look into whether the CPU reference point is lower than it needs to be; if so, increase it.
  • consider a CPU fan with higher capacity.

This is where I think @Stux is on to something with his script, which as I understand it will automatically increase the PER zone if the CPU fan is not getting the job done. Maybe I should consider that feature.

I do see a problem with formatting of the settings printout in spinpid2.log; not related but I'll look into that. Thanks.

Every once in awhile, the fans reset itself to full 100%. Ive noticed this on the cooler days like the last few days. Last night, temps were low and such the fans reset themselves to 100% despite the low drive temps. So the above logs are after killing the process and restarting using the new updated scripts to test out. I'll watch it for sure. The script has done very well managing the drive temps on normal temperature days. I researched for what the ideal temp for my processor is but intel doesn't give it to you "blank and white" so i'm not sure what temp I should aim for with my processor.

You're talking about the PER fans 1-4? Does the main log indicate a BMC reset? I would like to see a log where that occurs. That BMC reset logic may need to be relaxed a bit.

I just thought of a 4th idea. You could take one of the peripheral fans (you would have to decide which one would be best) and switch it to the FANA header with the CPU fan, using a splitter. This is a bit of a kludge, and the log would only report RPM for one of the fans. But this would increase chassis cooling when the CPU fan needs more help.

I posted this issue a couple pages back on this thread. I was still using version 2017-01-08 so the BMC resets weren't logged. I'll stick to the newest script posted recently and post back if it resets to full.

With this new script, do you think I can make the fans go down to 20%? Or will it make the fans hit threashholds and cause issues? Drives are still running cool.

I went ahead and set the min per duty cycle for 20% which dropped the per fans from 900 to 600 rpms. Hopefully this can warm things up some inside the box.

Yes, but isn't that the opposite of what you're trying to achieve? It will make the CPU fan even less able to bring CPU temp down.

So played a bit more with the fans. I let the per fans go full blast for a few min. This started to reduce the CPU fan rpm down to about 50%. Lowest I have seen it. So this for sure tells me the CPU fan is inadequate or I'm aim for a too low for this CPU temp. So it's not a script issue at all.

Next I setup my min per duty setting to 10% and reduced my per fan thresholds to 100 200 300. so far temps are coming up and BMC hasn't tried to reset to full. I'll play with it. and report back.

Anyone else running a xeon E3? what temps should i be aiming/set for?

Maybe a better fan setup like Corsair H60 type that takes the hot air right out the back of case from the CPU.

Using the settings bellow, drives have been steady at the set point at mean. CPU FAN on the other hand is 100% all the time. I ordered a Noctua NH-D15 to replace the stock CPU heatsink/fan. If after that the CPU FAN still runs high (doubt it) I'll adjust the cpu set point a bit higher. I'll report back then.

Got the NH-D15 on the CPU. CPU temps are now much lower along with low CPU duty cycle. CPU duty used to be at 100% all day long. Now, it's in the 30-40%. Much better. The stock CPU heatsink/fan was obviously not sufficient.

Now for my issue with the spinpid2 script.

Ever since upgrading to the latest script, i have had lots of, "script needs to reset due to rpm" or something like that error. I here the fans go to MAX at this point, and the fans never go back down to the requested duty unless I restart the script. Temps are below the setpoint with the fans remaining at max even after reset.

After looking at the logs, I can see a reason for it. So i'll post the logs here. The old script that used to work for me just fine without all these resets was from 1-1-17 i think.

Also, there seems to be some code printing out on the logs under setting on inital startup. Not sure if you did that on purpose.

Also, how can I set the log file to append itself instead of replacing itself upon restarting the script?
