Failed transition from 13.0 to BlueFin

Just a quick note regarding my experiences attempting to transition between a TrueNAS-13.0-U4 and TrueNAS SCALE-Bluefin [release] on a 20 bay system about 8-10 years old. I updated by selecting new train; this proceeded properly and system rebooted without issues. I was able to access Bluefin GUI remotely and did not make any changes, just looked at settings and new UI features. After 10 min I rebooted, but server than hung with:

Importing pool 'freenas-boot' using defaults
.....
Pool 'freenas-boot' has encountered an uncorrectable I/O failure and has been suspended

The system then hung and I had no way to fix or troubleshoot.

I don't have much to add other than to note that I use USB thumb drives to boot and have SAS92xx and HBA94xx devices for storage (yes, I know the concerns for USB thumb drives, but I've successfully used the excellent Sandisk Ultra Extremes for almost a decade without any issues whatsoever).

I do want to thank the developers for an amazingly easy recovery: I reinstalled TrueNAS-13.0-U4 from a USB boot drive (full install, not upgrade, and overwriting all data) and then restored all settings from a .tar config file. I was back up and running in <20 min, with half of that time just building the install USB stick. Wow. Imagine doing that with a Windows system.

This is the first time I've ever had a Free/TrueNAS system ever fail on an update like that (I've been an enthusiast user since 2011). I've had *amazing* stability over the years. As such, this isn't a complaint about Bluefin but rather a big thank you developers for a decade of ultra stable software. Although I'm a linux user I will be sticking with the FreeBSD based 13.0 system for a while longer--please continue to support with bug fixes and security updates. I'm FAR more interested in stability/reliability than new features.

Again, thanks developers!

Glad you were able to recover! I've also had something similar happen on one of my SCALE boxes about 9 months back. Brand new M2 boot device crapped out in the first 30 days. Was able to grab the config file and reload within just a few minutes after installing the new device. That is a super handy feature for all boot-devices, not just unreliable USB :)
