Thank you reading this post! Very new to FreeNAS, my flash drive failed on my HP N40L. Did not have configuration saved.

GPSguy was very helpful in getting me to reinstalling 8.3.1 on a brand new flash drive and confirming that all my data is still intact via putty. I can access the FreeNAS control page via using the URL address in windows. JUST CAN'T ACCESS THE FILES VIA WINDOWS.

I need help getting me to the final step please! Any help would be appreciated!

Either upload your backed-up config file (you do have a backup, right?) or redo your config - namely your shares, in this case.

Thank you for the reply. As I stated in my intro, I do NOT have a backup. The person that helped me set up the inital system did not teach me that I could do this. Lesson learned!

My question to you is, how do I redo the config without losing my data? Again, the data was confirmed to still be there using putty.

Thx!

If you have confirmed the data is still there, then all you need to do is setup the network shares.

Not sure what you are wanting help with exactly. You don't seem to even know, but I'd recommend you consult the manual.

Aside from that, you are going to have to figure this out on your own or pay that person to help you set it up again.

In his other thread, https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/no-password-no-longer-can-access-nas.28528/#post-186687 we learned that, at a minimum, he was having serious networking problems and couldn't access the server. And, he didn't have a backup of his configuration file.

I worked with him over the last week, 2 phone calls, a number of PM's, and a join.me session this morning. His server is now visible on his network - he can ping from the server to his workstation, google.com and from his workstation to the server. This morning I autoimported his volume and used putty to verify that the data was intact on his server. Also showed him some areas he'd need to configure and how to save his configuration file.

btw, don't upgrade him past 8.3.x for now - his pool is at ~89% full. He has 3 disks in a stripe - fortunately he does have backups of all his files.

He already has the documentation - I provided links to it and the software, a week ago.

He's the only user on the box and needs CIFS configured so he can access his files. The reality is that he really needs everything else configured, email, monitoring, SMART, a static IP address, ... Someone else (another FreeNAS user?) helped/set it up for him before.

I explained that I don't have the time, nor do I want to get involved with the next phase. I did say that the information on configuring it is in the manual, but if he needs additional help, he might want to offer some $$'s to help him along.

I know cyberjock used to do this work on the side, but I don't think he does it anymore. Are there others who might be willing to help? If so, contact the OP.

I don't do this work anymore, and based on what you just told me, I wouldn't want to touch that system either. I don't want to be "the guy that gets blamed when stuff I didn't do f*cks sh*t up".

thanks for your replies guys. not blaming ANYONE for their help, just didn't know i could backup config. again, gpsguy-really appreciate your time and effort.

i have read the manual that gpsguy provided, but it does not answer the question of whether my data will disappear if i configure the CIFS. I have only configured CIFS once, when there wasnt any data, just fresh hard drives.

if someone can answer that question, i will follow the directions of the manual. JUST DID NOT WANT TO RISK MY DATA DOING SOMETHING I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO.

please understand my lack of knowledge on the topic, just trying to rescue my data. thx!

As long as you stay away from section 6 of the manual, your data should be safe.

See section 7.3 of the manual for information on configuring CIFS. When you browse for the path to your data, it's in: /mnt/tank/ ...

Back up and running! Thanks gpsguy, for all your help and advice. All the data is showing. Followed the directions of the manual as soon as you told me my data should be safe.

Glad to hear! Have you backed up your configuration file yet? I'd suggest you do so, whenever you make changes to the configuration. Save some of the old versions, just in case you don't like the changes you made in the most recent one.

Search the manual for the topics below and configure them. It's not an exhaustive list ...

"The reality is that he really needs everything else configured, email, monitoring, SMART, a static IP address"

yes, backed up configuration, saved the configuration file to another memory stick for redundancy. good to go!
