Hi,

I am running 4x Ironwolf 8TB harddrives in a mirror with 2 vdevs in my FreeNAS machine.
Currently write speed is at ~420MB/s and read speed at ~350MB/s. This was tested via dd on FreeNAS directly with blocksize 2048 and compression off for testing purposes.

I want to extend the pool in order to increase read and write performance and was wondering which option is the better way to go.
1. extend the existing pool by adding 2x 8TB (7200RPM) Ironwolf HDDs with a third vdev.
2. extend the existing pool by adding 4x 4TB (5400RPM) Ironwolf HDDs with a third and fourth vdev.

from a cost perspective it's pretty much the same. 4TB is almost half the price of 8TB HDDs.

On first sight, option 2 looks like a no-brainer in terms of performance. However, may the slower RPM have an impact on the pool? If the difference of read and write performance between 6x8TB and 4x8TB+4x8TB isn't that huge, maybe 6x8TB is more future proof, due to less power consumption, better extensibility etc.?

What are your thoughts?

best
