/etc overwritten on boot?

Hi, I'm fairly new to FreeNAS and FreeBSD, but been kicking around Unix since AT&T System V. During boot I see a message about monthly stats and I think that would be a good thing...

I've tried several ways to enable it both editing the /etc/periodic.conf and creating a /etc/periodic.conf.local - but every time I reboot the files are back to stock. I'm also turning off the 'daily_status_3ware_raid_enable' since I don't have any 3ware controllers, and I don't need that in my daily e-mails.

I did find /conf/base/etc on my CF card (boot media) and I think that is the set of files to edit so that on the next boot it will be kept, but I wanted to ask here before I started messing around. I know root is mounted RO, and I'd need to remount RW, but not a big deal.

I do understand that something like this would not be preserved across an upgrade, but I don't mind fixing a few custom files after an upgrade.

Thanks for any advice.

David,

This is a FAQ question, but since there seems to be 79 different ways of asking about it, you probably missed it when you read the FAQ ;) The FAQ is way overdue for updating, but we're waiting for a new system to manage it. There's also a sticky at the top of the Noob section relating to perodic.conf that you missed too.

Anyway, you're right, /conf/base/etc after mount -uw / is where you can make *some* changes, but a lot of stuff is actually store in the FreeNAS sqlite3 database in /data and overwrites some of the stuff there.

A bunch of us here have been around since System V, so welcome to the "old-guys" group :o

Take some time and read the FAQ and Stickies as well as the documentation. Most of the stuff you're likely to ask has been asked too many times already and is covered in those places.

Welcome to the FreeNAS 8 Forums!

Thank for the quick (and polite) reply! I looked at the FAQ 3 times, and now I'll look a 4th to see where I missed it. I did see the sticky about the e-mail, but since I wasn't thinking about e-mail I skipped it. Now I see exactly what was looking for is right there.... I have so much to learn:D.

Thanks also for the warm welcome! Now I just need to figure out why my box keeps locking up and not responding under heavy disk writes using iSCSI... Already read bug 1531 - this is going to be fun.
