Hi,

The other day I upgraded my dev Freenas 11.1 to 11.2 U8. I have a Dell R710 populated with all 6 3.5 drives. It booted from a single USB Sandisk on the rear.

On boot up after the upgrade, I was getting (da6:umass-sim8:0:0:0:0): CAM Status: CCB request completed with error Retrying command.

I rebooted a few more times and same thing. Then I moved the USB drive to the front panel USB on the Dell R710 and rebooted and it came up normally. I got lucky.

I am not trusting the USB stick anymore or the USB slots and would like to move the OS to something more stable. I have 2 free PCIE full length slots on the R710.

Can anyone suggest a stable solution and the process to do it as I will be upgrading to TrueNas 12.x when the stable version is available.

Thanks,

In the interim, you could mirror the boot drive for peace of mind.

Not really. The same brand/model of USB I've used on one server weren't much chop in a different model server. Some trial and error required I'm afraid. Check my signature block for the stick brands/models I've had success with.

got it, thanks. Do you think using the PCIE slots would be a waste of a slot for OS boot?

I've stuck with USB sticks as I don't have spare slots, but many forum members are using SSD for a boot drive as they are more reliable. Search the forum as there are plenty of posts on this.
