I have setup a couple of FreeNAS boxes for family members
I'm looking for IDIOT proof "Plugin a disk" process

This might be a useful feature!

is there an quick and easy way to attach a USB drive (or internal SATA drive) and sharing its content (Preferably READ ONLY)

ie. a Share defined as USB (but ideally inside an existing share such as media)

Ideally, the USB drive would be available inside my Media folder so people can EXCHANGE movies/photos/music without having learn to IMPORT a VOLUME and Share it!!:)

usually these disks are pc format ie. NTFS

Additionally, it would be nice to be able to COPY from USB to a datastore - perhaps initiated by GUI

Anyone up for a challenge !!
maybe there is something already available I've missed!

I would like the function requested by bhrt60 too . can not connect a USB memory (USB stick or USB disk is the same), formatted in NTFS is very frustrating, and force users to use other OS for your NAS.

I hope to have this feature very soon. thanks

I wouldn't hold my breath given FreeBSD's poor NTFS support. FreeBSD seems to have poor support for nearly all foreign file systems. :(

It is invariably the unexpected removal of devices which causes the most problems - kernel panics and all sorts of fun.

Using USB for permanent data store is not very smart.

Using NTFS with FreeBSD or any OS that is derived from FreeBSD is also not very smart.

Doing both.. that's double "not very smart".

NTFS and FAT32 are "common" for Windows users. And while 99% of the systems on the planet by sheer numbers are Windows systems, all the high reliability OSes(Linux and Unix based systems) do NOT run Windows.

As a former 100% Windows user I can understand your frustration, but you'll find that the grass is much greener when you accept that Windows is not for the high end servers and those that need high uptime and high security systems. It's for the general masses and that's it.

Honestly, if you want to use NTFS as your storage, then Freenas probably isn't for you.

For good NTFS support, look to Windows Home Server. NTFS is a Microsoft thing. There's really no 'pc' format, as pc's can run a multitude of os's.

hello guys.

@cyberjock

cyberjock, I'm sorry if I've wasted your time, I had not time to read the forum before writing the post.
I do not want to know which OS is more secure, I know perfectly well that WINDOWS SERVER OS is not secure. you know that the world is not only FREEBSD, UBUNTU, REDHAT. but also WINDOWS! I wrote, which is frustrating not to be able to use a usb memory NTFS/FAT32 for data transfer, I want to add that there can be no OS "closed" who do not want to read the filesystem "foreigners."
I hope that soon the staff of freenas can solve the connection of usb keys NTFS/FAT32 as in UBUNTU LINUX, REDHAT etc.. etc..
thanks

@titan_rw

I repeat, I would like connect the USB memory to my freenas and transfer data on my nas.

The issue isn't with FreeNAS. It's an upstream issue with FreeBSD.

If this need to use NTFS is a deal breaker you may want to start looking at using a true Windows Server instead.
