Hey, I'm slowly getting things setup but have run into problems that I don't know how to solve. Here's what I've done so far. Specs first.

TS 140 with 20GB of ECC memory and Xeon E3-1225, FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201511280648 (just updated).

1. I've successfully got 2x5TB Toshiba drives setup in a stripe, CIFS shares, and data transferred over the network from my PC.

2. I tried importing data directly from disk but that didn't work. I posted in this thread if anyone can figure that problem out.
https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/unable-to-import-ntfs-disks.39665/

3. My next step is to setup a mirror with 2x2TB WD drives. They're greens so I've set wdidle3 to 300 and I've used the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics in Windows to run a short and extended test. Everything checks out fine. I've had them for a few years, no problems. There's data on them now but I want to format them and get them online in Freenas fresh.

However when I put them in the server one of them sets off the "red alert".

At this point I'm not sure what my next step is. Those pending sectors are of concern. How do I fix them? Why does the drive show up fine in Windows after an extended test but upon boot without any tests it's flagged in Freenas?

All help is appreciated.

Why does the drive show up fine in Windows after an extended test but upon boot without any tests it's flagged in Freenas?
A short SMART test can pass even with non-zero valued for any or all of #5, #197 and #198, as long as the predefined threshold isn't reached. Read up on SMART attributes in Wikipedia to understand why. However, it makes FreeNAS nervous, hence the warnings.

Run an extended SMART test on the drive. If it fails, run an ATA reset on it. If that succeeds, run a badblocks destructive write test on it. If that comes back clean, deploy it but keep a close eye on it for rising valued in #5, #197 or #198. Or just save all the trouble and replace it now.

It doesn't appear to have failed. I still have to deal with those pending sectors though.

An ATA reset or a destructive badblocks will take care of the pending sectors, assuming the drive is fundamentally healthy. Don't deploy it the way it is now. Also consider an RMA - it's less than a year old.

EDIT: I should say, it has less than a year of usage. Obviously I have no idea how long you've had it.

I've had both 2TB drives since 2010 or 2011 I think so no RMA. I bought them when hard drive prices were super low but they've mostly been unused. I'm running a long test on the other one and I'll run destructive badblocks on both when it's done. That should force a rewrite and hopefully get those sectors out of pending. I'm going to mirror them and have a backup on an external. My next step will be figuring out incremental backups and regular SMART tests.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a plan. Finally, don't forget to schedule short and extended SMART tests and make sure email notifications are working.

ATA reset is also known as ATA secure erase. My go-to for this is a Redo Backup live CD - look for the Drive Reset utility. Another way is using the disk erase button in the Disk Utility in Ubuntu, which you can also run from a live DVD or USB stick.

If I execute this is it correct?

Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada0 bs=512 count=1 seek=220165200 conv=noerror,sync

The bs= is supposed to be 512 like SMART says or 4096?

I have tried to do a drive reset btw but the drive is FROZEN (https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/ATA_Secure_Erase) and I can't unfreeze it. I don't see any security settings in the bios and hot un/plugging the SATA cable doesn't do anything for me.

Edit: I don't think it's possible on the TS140 due to the bios. I'd have to move the drive to my computer to try. Maybe tomorrow.

You're sure you did the the destructive write test?

You can usually avoid this by only powering up the drive after the system has booted. A drive dock makes this easy.

I did the one with the -ws modifier so I'm pretty sure. I tried to get around the freeze by unplugging the drives SATA and replugging it in but that didn't work.

I'm having fun figuring all this out and messing around but I'm trying to get to the bottom of this. Decided to write zeros to the drive with dd but came home to find I was barely 15% complete after like 8 hours. Looked it up and realized I was writing one byte at a time so changed it to bs=100M.

If I'm understanding this correctly then it should force a reallocation but so should the badblocks test I thought. We'll see tomorrow how it goes after another long test.

That's the one. Did it report any errors? If it didn't make the drive remap the bad sectors, the drive is probably junk at this point, and I don't think dd will help.

I use a Redo Backup live CD and a drive dock for the ATA Secure Erase, which gets around the FROZEN issue. If you don't have a drive dock, at least try connecting the drive after the machine has booted.

I use a Redo Backup live CD and a drive dock for the ATA Secure Erase, which gets around the FROZEN issue. If you don't have a drive dock, at least try connecting the drive after the machine has booted.

Badblocks didn't report errors directly but the long test afterwards did. I didn't quite know how to remap just the selected LBA so I was trying the ATA format and then ultimately writing zeroes to the drive.

When I booted the machine for the ATA reset I had the hard drive plugged in but then unplugged it and replugged it back in after boot. Would it maybe have worked if I simply tried booting with no hard drive attached and then attached it?

Either way I believe the zeroes and last extended test show a usable drive now. I have 0 pending sectors. It also shows 0 reallocated though which is a bit perplexing. Still it went from 33 pending to 4 after badblocks and now to 0 after writing zeroes to the drive.

The multizone error rate also dropped from 1507 to 380 and now to 128.

Am I good to set this up in a mirror now you think? With backups of course.

I have 0 pending sectors. It also shows 0 reallocated though which is a bit perplexing. Still it went from 33 pending to 4 after badblocks and now to 0 after writing zeroes to the drive.
According to the Wikepedia explanation of SATA attributes, a pending sector reallocation that results from a read failure can go away following a successful write to that sector, which can mask underlying problems with the physical medium. I'd keep a close eye on it.

EDIT: especially considering you have Offline_Uncorrectable in double figures: "The total count of uncorrectable errors when reading/writing a sector. A rise in the value of this attribute indicates defects of the disk surface and/or problems in the mechanical subsystem."
