If i start a SMART extended test with smartctl
Code:
smartctl -t long /dev/sdaX

and it says, that the test will run for 480 min.
What happens when i turn off the computer before that time is over?
Does the test continue the next day where it stopped or does it write an entry in the smart log that the test was interrupted?

The test is interrupted. Why would you shutdown if you started a test and know that it is going to run for eight hours?

No, it does not continue when power is restored, not where it stopped or anywhere else. Why would it?
If you power down, or restart, the test is interrupted and that should be logged, but it depends on the drive vendor.
You would need to start a new test and the time would begin again.

To use the time more efficiently.
If I start the test now and let it run for about 3 hours, then I would have to wait only 5 hours instead of 8 hours the next day if it were possible to continue the test.
Also without that possibility to continue the test i am forced to wait for the next day to start the test.

Thanks, that's what i wanted to know. It's sad, that it doesn't continue the test. :(

Why not let it run over night and it is done when you come back? You don't need to be awake when the test finishes.

If the server were somewhere in the basement i would do that, but it is next to my bed thus it's not an option to run it over night.

Put the server someplace that is not so close it will disturb your sleep. You are not going to want the server turned off every night when it is in service.

The server comes into another room as soon as the renovations in my house are completed. But at the moment this is not an option. :(
